Mazda M Hybrid is our innovative evolution of hybrid car technology. It uses a small generator to capture the energy that is normally wasted during braking. It stores that energy using it to assist the engine, saving fuel in the process by powering the car’s electrical systems and optimising your drive. So, it’s not the same as a plug-in hybrid, or a conventional hybrid electric vehicle – no plug or charging is required.
When you decelerate the generator produces electricity which is stored in a 24-volt battery. This electricity is then used for starting the engine and providing engine assistance when you pull away and across gear changes. It also powers the car's electrical system.
With the electric motor assisting, pulling away from a standstill is easier. When you change gear the battery supports the engine, evening out any inconsistencies in your driving. And your start-up is quicker and quieter with i-stop disengaging at the biting point, not when you put the clutch down, giving you a smoother drive all around.
With engine assist from restart, gear shift assist control, and automatic engine shut off below 6mph you will get improved fuel consumption, lower emissions, and an improved driving experience.

What is Mazda M Hybrid?
It is our mild-hybrid technology. It uses a small Integrated Starter
Generator (ISG) to capture the energy that is normally wasted during braking
and stores it to power the car’s electrical systems, reducing the load
on the engine and saving fuel in the process.
How does it work?
When you decelerate, the integrated starter motor generator produces
electricity which is stored in a 24-volt battery. This electricity is
used for a number of purposes including starting the engine and
providing motor assistance when you pull away. It can also power the
car’s electrical systems.
Will I need to drive differently?
Not at all, but you may notice that you drive more smoothly. With the
electric motor assistance, pulling away from a standstill is easier, and
when you change gear the motor assistance makes gear changes smoother.
Will I need to charge it?
No. The battery charges as you drive – but only when you slow down, so it never takes power away from the engine.
Does it cost more?
No. Mazda M Hybrid helps save you money by improving fuel economy and reducing emissions. Mazda M Hybrid is standard on all Mazda3 and Mazda CX-30 models, including Skyactiv-X vehicles.
