If neither the Transit Courier nor the Transit Connect are large enough for your requirements, take a look at the Transit Custom. Available in a wide range of configurations and trim levels, this dynamic yet functional van boasts plenty of safety tech, a strong engine range and enhanced fuel efficiency. Just as importantly, it offers plenty of cargo capacity: from 3,500 litres to 6,800 litres. In terms of payload, the Transit Custom provides between 1,108 kg and 1,459 kg, depending on whether you opt for a single or double-cab model.
Trim levels begin with the well-equipped Leader, which features a nearside sliding door and wide-opening rear doors, allowing flexible access to the van’s load bay. The driver is easily able to get comfortable, thanks to an eight-way-adjustable position; meanwhile, a dual passenger seat ensures all models accommodate at least three travellers.
A minimum four-speaker sound system features an AM/FM tuner, DAB digital radio and USB and Bluetooth connectivity. Next-tier Trend grades, meanwhile, include an eight-inch touchscreen, providing access to Ford SYNC 3, which offers satellite navigation and AppLink functionality, among other things. Safety equipment includes Electronic Stability Programme, which has been adapted specifically to work with a van of the Transit Custom’s size.
Fuel-driven models are fitted with a 2.0-litre diesel engine, with power outputs ranging from 104bhp to 182bhp. The most economic of these is a 128bhp unit, which returns a combined 38.8mpg – and even greater cost-efficiency is possible if you opt for the plug-in hybrid model.
