Although the coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown has been seen by many as good news for the environment as daily global CO2 emissions decreased by 17% by early April 2020 compared with the mean 2019 levels (according to scientists in a report by Nature.com), mainly thanks to “changes in surface transport” as populations were generally ordered to keep safe by staying at home, many authorities are concerned that levels of CO2 and NO2 are likely to spike soon after lockdown restrictions are lifted by individual countries across the world.
Professor Corinne Le Quéré from the University of East Anglia (who headed up the study) said: “A big worry that people will naturally want to go back to their cars to go to work, and that could rebound the emissions to the same level or even higher than before, once everybody goes back.”
However, the scientists concluded that the recent effects of “policy changes and economic shifts” clearly show that the choices governments make concerning public and private transport will shape the future of the fight against climate change.
The shift towards newer hybrid and electric vehicles away from older vehicles is seen as a huge opportunity to reduce pollution sustainably in the long term.
Professor Le Quéré explained: “Battery prices have come down, we have lots of models and governments are going to try to boost their economies. So if these two things can align, then it could make a huge difference to the transportation of tomorrow.”
