As reported by us previously, car insurance companies having been looking into the issue of refunds for motorists whose vehicles have been idle during the lockdown intended to help keep everyone safe during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and alleviate the pressures on the NHS.
Also, a spokesperson for the Direct Line Group of brands mentioned that customers can contact insurers to reduce their expected annual mileage (and it’s possible to remove other named drivers on the same policy) to potentially get some money refunded.
Today though, Admiral has become the first motor insurance company to offer customers (providing they had a car or van policy with them on 20th April) an unprompted refund of £25 as vehicles up and down the nation remain idle during the lockdown. Do not fear if your policy is not with Admiral though, as the pressure is now on other motor insurance companies to copy Admiral’s move.
Chief executive of UK insurance at Admiral, Cristina Nestares, explained: "This is an unprecedented time when people across the country are driving significantly less than before the lockdown, and we expect this to lead to a fall in the number of claims we are seeing. We want to give the money we would have used to pay these claims back to our loyal customers in this difficult time."
While a refund is welcome news, it’s still worth looking on your insurance company’s website to check what else you may be entitled to. Many such firms are allowing customer to defer payments.
