101-Year-Old Ford Fan Test Drives the All-Electric Mustang Mach-E

90 years after getting behind the wheel of the Ford Model T, motor enthusiast Harold Baggott got to experience motoring in Ford’s first electric vehicle (EV), the Mustang Mach-E.

During his test drive experience, the centenarian was struck by the quietness of electric motoring.

Fully electric vehicles are a lot quieter than their internal combustion engine counterparts. Not only do these zero-emission vehicles help cut air pollution, resulting in cleaner air, they also help to reduce noise pollution.

Although quiet, the All-Electric Mustang Mach-E is not completely silent. It features three selective drive modes with its own sci-fi-inspired engine sounds which you can hear under the acceleration. "Whisper" drive mode is calm and quiet, “Active” is a balance of excitement and comfort – perfect for everyday driving – and "Untamed", inspired by the iconic Mustang sound for a more exhilarating driving experience.

Following the Mustang Mach-E test drive, Mr Baggott said:

“Since the age of 10, I’ve retained my interest in motoring and today find myself interested in the switch to electrification following the government phasing out the traditional combustion engines I’m used to.

I have reminisced about my driving history with the Model T and seen what the future has in store. It was exciting to get behind the wheel of what I expect to see my great grandchildren will be driving.”

Harold first got behind the wheel in 1930. At the age of 10, he learned to drive in a Ford Model T on his family’s private land. He gained his driver’s licence in 1936 and purchased his first car – Ford 8 Popular that cost £100. The following year he replaced it with a Ford Anglia.

Since then, Harold and his family have owned more than 20 Fords privately, as well as Ford commercial vehicles in chassis form, converted into coaches for a fleet of 140 run by their travel and coach business.

As a special treat, Ford organised for Mr Baggott to have a passenger ride in the fully restored 1915 Model T from Ford’s heritage collection at Beaulieu’s National Motor Museum, along with members from three generations of his family, before getting behind the wheel of the Mustang Mach-E.
