New Trail & Active Transit & Tourneo Models Unveiled

Ford has announced new Trail & Active variants with distinctive styling and further capabilities added to the renowned Transit toughness and practicality.

The new Transit Trail and Transit Custom Trail models have been engineered especially to work in rougher, tougher conditions with the help of improved traction from a new mechanical limited-slip differential (mLSD) on the front-wheel drive Transit and Transit Custom variants, plus Intelligent All-Wheel Drive on the bold, rugged Transit Trail.

The vehicles' Electronic Stability Control systems have also been recalibrated to work with the mLSD with no adverse impact on either fuel efficiency or CO2 emissions.

The Transit Trail's Intelligent All-Wheel Drive improves off-road traction by sending up to 50% of torque to the front axle based on how much grip is available on different road surfaces and in different drive modes. Selectable drive modes include ‘Slippery’ and ‘Mud/Rut’ to improve performance on various surfaces. AWD Lock mode splits torque 50:50 between the front and rear axles on extreme low-grip surfaces.

Exterior and interior upgrades also make sure that the Transit Trail and Transit Custom Trail are able to provide practical solutions and keep occupants in comfort even in more challenging environments away from normal roads. Upgrades include full, durable, wipe-clean leather seating, air conditioning, power-foldable door mirrors, auto lighting, and Ford’s Quickclear heated windscreen as standard.

Hans Schep, general manager for Commercial Vehicles, Ford of Europe explained: "The Active and Trail models demonstrate how versatile and capable the Transit range can be. From businesses that operate off the beaten track to families who want a vehicle as adventurous as they are, there is a Transit to suit every need."

These Trail and Active models are available with more fuel-efficient, 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel and EcoBlue Hybrid 48-volt mild hybrid powertrain options, in addition to FordPass Connect modem technology among other new features and driver assistance systems.

The new Transit Custom Active and Tourneo Custom Active models are ideal for the (unsurprisingly) more active lifestyles of private and business customers with extra cladding on the wheel arches, body sides, rear bumper and mirror caps as well as the option of a new mechanical limited-slip differential (mLSD) for enhanced traction on looser surfaces.

Ford has used SUV-inspired interior and exterior styling to add to these models' appearances and comfort (such as unique 17-inch alloy wheels, a signature Active mesh grille and standard roof rails) as well as boosting their practical capabilities off road. These models' unique interior specification also includes part-leather seat trim.

The fantastically flexible Tourneo Custom Active’s seating can be reconfigured easily to give passengers more room (e.g. a conference seating layout) or increase loadspace. While the short wheelbase (SWB) Tourneo Custom Active can seat up to eight people (including driver), the long wheelbase (LWB) model obviously offers even more space. Seats can even be reversed or removed for more space. The mounting points for the seats can then be used to install racks to hold bicycles safely.

Both vehicles offer a wide range of variants and body styles to suit customers' needs and lifestyles, such as the Transit Custom Active panel van in SWB and LWB with 3,000kg GVM & the Transit Custom Active double-cab-in-van (DCIV) in SWB and LWB with 3,200kg GVM.

Active variants come with power outputs of 130PS, 170PS and 185PS depending on which model and specification is chosen. Both manual and automatic transmissions are available across the range (optional mLSD available on manual vehicles only).

The range of models with Active variants are currently scheduled to be expanded to include the Transit Connect and Tourneo Connect later in 2020.
